Skirrid fawr

Today proved to be a very productive day. The weather was sunny and mild and our office for the day was two farms close to Skirrid Fawr mountain and one farm situated on Llanarth estate.

I'd like to give a mention to three lovely individuals who made Alex and I very welcome on the farms we visited. We managed to fit 4 nest boxes in total. The first farm we visited we were greeted by a lovely lady farmer called Isabel who gave us a guided tour of her farm.

Alex and I fitted a Barn Owl nest box inside a Barn and a little Owl box on the outside of another farm building. We were also shown some Woodlands which was pretty much leading up to Skirrid Fawr and looked perfect habitat for Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts. We will be revisiting the farm before April to erect about 50 small boxes around the Woodlands Isabel owns. We are both really looking forward to that. Thank you for the coffee and kitkats, Isabel.

The second farm we visited we were met by Brian who was the farmer who breeds Shire Horses and what a lovely fella he was to. We fitted an internal box inside one of the farm building with the intention of revisiting in the Spring to fit a external box on a grand old oak tree.

The third and final farm we visited was situated on Llanarth estate and this one had numerous outbuildings we could have used. However my eye was drawn to the huge red brick Barn and following a guided tour by Nick the Tennant it was decided we fit an internal nest box on the big splendid oak beams. As you can see in the images this Barn was a lovely building and thankfully well kept by Llanart estate.
